I am thinking of moving into this line of work – based on site selling new homes. Please can someone tell me the good and bad points about this job? Thanks
Bad – new home sales are down.
Requires weekend hours.
Good – competition is fierce for the sales that are out there and that can be a good learning experience for you. You will also be in contact with good people to know for other business things you may go into. The potential buyers come to you and you do not have to go out and find them. If someone wants a NEW home their choices are limited. Sellers are more willing to deal and more flexible in their pricing.
You will get to meet many new people.
New home sales looks good on a sales resume.
You have a competitive advantage over people that just sell existing homes. You have something unique.
The homes will be clean and you do not have to give input to the sellers on how to present the homes.
You will not have to work early in the AM.

It’s amazing how long an 11-4 day can seem on a wet Wednesday afternoon! It’s very boring, your sales manager might ‘forget’ to put your comission and expenses through for weeks on end or, until they get the sack, whichever comes first. Not a job I’d want again! They’ll put you in the caravan (with chemical loo) before the show home gets built when you start, so you’ll get all the ‘just looking’locals and you won’t sell anything, then they’ll put their most experienced negotiator in until the site is all but sold and expect you to sell the two turkeys that are left!

been doing new homes (and resales) for 15+ years. It’s a great job.
You have to work. It sounds like groovymaude wasn’t cut out for a job of sales. You need to work hard and roll with the punches. If you just sit there from 11-4 and do nothing, you earn nothing. I love the job and make in the mid 300’s on the new home part.
Email me with questions.
