Is there a good way to learn about whether or not a house is built well? I would like to purchase a home in the neighboring subdivision, but want something more fruitful than Googling the builder’s name and looking for complaints.

If other houses in the subdivision have been sold, go talk to some of the home buyers. Also, and even better, ask about or research other subdivisions they have built and go talk to home owners who have lived in their houses for a longer period of time. If there are problems, the people living with the problems should be more than willing to give you the true facts.
