What features would you want in a custom home?

I’m 17 and I’ve lived in the same house, built in the early 1980s for my whole life. My parents are buying a plot of land and are going to build a custom home. They want to know if I’d like anything in particular in my room.

I’m in high school and I want to own my own custom home building business. Unfortunately I don’t know much about construction. What can I do now to get started in this career? What skills should I learn?

You need to take some classes on architecture and maybe some type of electrical classes and you need to learn how to do plumbing and roofing which can be taught to you by a person who already has the trade. I would say maybe you could contact some one already in the business and maybe think about helping them with a job first. Learn everything before you start. You should talk to your guidance counselor and see what college classes you need to take and what colleges you need to consider.

I have a home new construction in the Shorewood Il area. All Custom, lots of crown, 20 ft ceilings, combination of stained and painted trim and doors, coffered ceilings. What might be an approx. cost to paint the interior.

A custom home should be painted to your colours..talk to your builder..custom is not left in builder’s beige, that is why you are paying to have a custom home built.

pretty much an architect without the math and stuff. I know this is a dumb question, but i know 3ds max/Sketchup/maya all very well. with those i can design some really really nice houses, and can model, texture and can light them. But i never really worry about the math part, i do know the simple stuff (making all the inner wall smaller than the outer walls..etc….)

So is there a job where i can just design it, and have someone else worry about the math? lol

Does anyone know what the average cost per sq ft is to build a custom home in the south bay area is? California
I found land for sale that is south Los Gatos out hwy17. It was 5 acres and was in a mountain area with nice views roads to the property electricity and it was in a neighborhood type setting. Price was about 200k

Are you talking building yourself? As long as the land is not included in the costs you can expect to pay at least 300 a square foot, but closer to 500 if you want it nice.

If you are talking about one hat is already build costs vary by area. A decent, not wealthy, but not poor, area will run you about 200 a square foot. Of course you are buying the land too.

If a builder reduced the price by 15% that means you are paying 85% of original amount.

.85x=$425,000
x=$425,000/.85
x=$500,000

$500,000 – $425,000 = $75,000

I Have already began plans on building our own home. We have a lot already selected and enough to pay 20-50% down on the total amount of the loan for the land and the home. I would like to hear from anyone out there that has already built their custom home recently so I know how to go about getting the conventional loan, what to watch out for, what tricks to follow that were learned by others, etc. Any insight or experience in this is appreciated!

I’m a real estate appraiser and have done many plans& spec custom built homes over the years. I have only once ever see one come in on budget by the time they finished. Most are 15-25% over budget. I’ve seen run one 50% over. Here’s the thing, you get a plan, get a builder, agree on the quote. The contract gives you the right to pick fixtures, flooring,etc up to a certain amount. You go shopping, and find the perfect tile for the kitchen, the perfect light fixture for over the dining table and it is only slightly over your allotted amount and this is your dream house so you agree to the extra. Before you know it, you are $40,000 over budget and calling the appraiser out again to see if the things you have done add any more value and you can up the loan amount. Think ahead, you will do this so- everyone does. So plan what you can afford to spend or borrow and initially spend 20% less – even with fighting to keep cost down, you will end up about where you want to be. Good luck.

unknown – have to have the exact measurements and heights

used for pallets and crates where i live – shipping containers

considered a durable wood – strong yet bendable – not overly pretty

others make sports equipment out of it
